A majority of these “tips” only further create racial tensions and divide.

1 – “Doing so doesn’t mean you get to absolve yourself of any other responsibility to end systemic racism.” A person being a different race than me does not mean they get to tell me I have a responsibility to participate in activism efforts for specific causes over others.

2 – “It’s imperative that the industry as a whole stops featuring events or weddings that take place at old slave plantations.” This is beyond ridiculous and is only further perpetuating racism. Regardless of what occurred on a specific property in the past doesn’t mean it is still occurring. To dwell on the past instead of paving the way by changing what it once was into something more positive, like a new marriage and love, only further perpetuates racism.

3 – “Even if you live in a province in Canada where the population is predominantly white, it doesn’t matter.” Yes, it does matter. I live in a town with no black people nor do I have the funding to hire or travel to where they are located. I have contacted black models before about collaborating and they have stood me up or didn’t want to travel to where I was located. If black people want more representation, they can take action to include themselves in collaborations. It is just as much their responsibility as it is anyone else’s.

4 – “5. Call out feature accounts and wedding platforms” I’m assuming you also mean to call out publications that only feature black people and their events to include more Asians, Native Americans, etc., right?

5 – “Expand and outsource to more black and brown professionals.” If they are more qualified and have a better skillset than fellow white or Asian ones, sure.

Hi!
Thank you so much for this post! I did have a question and rather than hide it, I figured I would ask here since asking is the only way to really grow and learn.
I am a family/lifestyle/headshot photographer and through no actual marketing (mostly word of mouth) I have attracted a lot of international/interracial families and clients. I am one half of an international couple (both white) and so that might be part of it. However, I would love to welcome more families like this and while I know that posting more sessions like this would help, I don’t want to suddenly be posting them out of nowhere as if I am being ‘tokenistic’ about it. Winter is my quiet time, so the business part of my IG isn’t full of any clients right now. I’d love to share some of the ones I have done in the last two years, but again am not wanting to be seen as just doing it for the sake of doing it (which is not the case). This is the same with headshots (particularly women). I’d love to work with more BIPOC women in this area, promoting their own businesses and passions, but I am unsure how to go about this without coming across as jumping on a bandwagon to be on-trend (again, not the case!).

Does any of this make sense? Would be interested to hear your thoughts.
